What Causes Fibroids?
Although the exact cause of fibroids remains unclear, certain factors are known to increase the risk of developing them:
- Hormonal Changes: Estrogen and progesterone, hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle, play a significant role in fibroid growth.
- Genetics: A family history of fibroids can increase a woman’s likelihood of developing them.
- Age: Women in their 30s and 40s are more prone to fibroids, especially before menopause.
- Lifestyle Factors: Diet, obesity, and stress can also contribute to fibroid development.
Risk Factors
- As women mature they are increasingly at risk of developing fibroid. The increase in the production of estrogen and progesterone (hormones produced by the ovaries) may influence the growth of the tumor.
- Women with a family medical history of recurrent fibroids in relatives have a high risk of developing fibroids.
- Women with high body weight are also at risk.
